During the year of 1960s, America had a lot of brilliant and intelligent scientist. One of them is named Charles Hard Townes. He was born on July 28, 1915 in Greenville, South Carolina. His father was an attorney named Henry Keith Townes and his mother, Ellen Townes.   He was fascinated in Physics when he was in his second year in college. For him its "beautifully logical structure", making physics his field in science.

Through out his life he had been awarded. 1961 he was awarded the David Sarnoff Electronics Award and Rumford Medal, 1962, John Carty Award, and 1964 He won a "Noble Prize in Physics with N.G. Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov for his contribution to fundamental work in quantum electronics leading to the development of the Maser and Laser." That doesn't end there, 1979 he was awarded the " Niels Bhor international medal award for contributing to peaceful use of atomic energy." From this point on he is still winning award from all over the place.

During the year of 1960s, maser is a device that produces coherent electromagnetic waves through amplification due to stimulated emission. Historically the term came from the acronym "Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation", although modern masers emit over a broad portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This has led some to replace "microwave" with "molecular" in the acronym, as suggested by Townes.

After his invention of the maser, Townes started to invent more things for people to be able to use. His achievements in college help him achieve and discover things that other people couldn't.
