Literature in the 1990’s

Many different things kept America busy during the 1990’s: television, computer, friends, sports, and for some reading. But with all this new technology kids forgot about books and got into video games and television. Kids needed to read to keep their brains active and build skills that will be crucial for their future. The world needed someone to come out with books that interested kids and not just the ones that already read, but those who didn’t.

R.L. Stine changed that and impacted children with the Goosebumps series. Stine was born October 8, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio and was the oldest of three. Stine found his first typewriter at the age of nine. He began writing stories and joke books for fun but little did he know that would be his destiny. Stine attended and graduated from Ohio State University and then moved to New York. There is where all the magic happened and he began writing joke books for kids and worked for Nickelodian.

In 1990 Stine teamed up with Parachute press and created Fear Street. Two years later Stine released his biggest series ever. This incredible and unforgettable series was Goosebumps. With its horror fiction genre it caught the attention of many different people. This was what American kids needed to detach them from all the technology that took over their lives. Although the books were a little scary kids of all ages enjoyed reading these books. His most famous was Night of the Living Dummy one, two, and three.
