SCIENCE IN THE 1990’s

Many different, important things happened in science and technology during the 1990’s. Some of these important events were the internet being available for the public, global warming awareness really took off, also research on AIDS and other medical problems. But for us kids the introduction to a new generation of video games; the Playstation and Nintendo 64.

Many significant medical events took place during the 1990’s. One of these major events were cancer prevention, especially skin cancer. Although there was no actual cure, scientists did find small improvements in lowering death rates. Another significant moment was the successful cloning of Dolly the sheep. The Human Genome project was really important as well, because it was meant for identifying all fifty to one hundred thousand genes in the human DNA.

The technology in the 1990’s improved and benefited us greatly. In the early 90’s the World Wide Web (www) became available to the public. This fascinated everyone because we could now shop, take museum tours, and listen to our favorite bands without leaving our house. All this technology also helped doctors save people from heart attacks with nuclear imaging and huge computer databases. Kids also benefited with all this new technology when the next generation in video games were released. These new gaming systems Playstation, Nintendo 64, and Sega introduced a new way to play games. All these new systems introduced better graphics and 3-D game play, which just improved the way you felt playing games and helped video games really take off.

On April 24, 1990 NASA sent the Hubble telescope into orbit. Although not the first telescope sent to space it is one of the largest and versatile. The Hubble telescope has helped NASA a lot with research and public relations. During this time many citizens were concerned about our environment. Many wanted laws to be passed which would help protect our environment further damage. One of the biggest concern was about carbon dioxide in the air. Though action was taken it seems to not have been enough because it has worsen through the years.

Science and technology really had improvements during this decade. All these advancements have improved our way of living greatly. Especially those in the medical fields because millions of lives have now been saved and with the new video game technology kids enjoy life more now.
