The 1990’s were a decade of war, growth in technology, and the rise of a new culture. War started off the decade with Iraq invading Kuwait. George H. W. Bush led his nation to victory over Iraq gaining much popularity, but ultimately failed in his election for a second term against Bill Clinton. Technology boomed in this decade as well as the culture in society. The decade faced many issues including an impeachment and terrorist attacks.

In the beginning of the decade Suddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in an attempt to seize the countries oil refineries. Acting out of fear that Iraq might also invade Saudi Arabia, The U.m, xvh v v nmf mn S. launched Operation Desert Shield, which sent about 543,000 troops, 48 aircrafts, and two naval battle groups to the Saudi-Kuwait-Iraq border on August 7, 1990.
On January 12, 1991, Congress authorized the military to invade Kuwait and drive Iraq out with force.  5 days later, the U.S. along with coalition forces launched a massive air campaign known as Operation Desert Storm. Ultimately, Iraq pulls out and the war has been won.

Technology advanced highly in this decade as well as the rise of pop culture. Internet became available to the public and by 1998, more than 45 million people were connected to the worldwide web. Cell phones became popular and people started buying more of them. Video games also became more popular with the creation of the Playstation. New types of music rose to the top. Grunge, techno, and hip-hop became a trend for people to listen to.

The current president in the beginning of the 1990’s was George H. W. Bush. Although he was successful in the Gulf War, his economic problems caused him to lose the election in 1992 against Bill Clinton. He won on behalf that he would fix the economy. Things would soon to be hard for President Clinton, as the Republicans had taken over Congress in 1994. Polls showed the country was better off in 1992 with Bush. Others said things had gotten worse. Clinton’s approval rating was 44%. But Clinton’s popularity would soon rise as the Republicans tried refusing to appropriate funds to keep the federal government running. The people did not like what Congress was doing and soon voters began to look kindly upon Clinton. In 1996, Clinton became the first Democrat to be reelected since 1944. With that being said, it was also the first Republican Congress to be reelected since 1930. For the first time in history, a Democratic president was reelected with the Grand Old Party controlling Congress.

The 1990’s were full of important issues. The bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 killed six people and injured more than a thousand. Another bombing also happened in Oklahoma City. On April 19, 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed by a group of conspirators. It left 168 people dead and over 800 injured. This attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in the 1990’s. These events brought about a rise in awareness of domestic and international terrorism. Bill Clinton’s trial case a big issue in the 90’s also. He was tried for lying under oath and became the 2nd president to be impeached.
The 1990’s were considered as the final year of the Cold War era. It started off with a war and ended with the impeachment of a president. Technology was at its peak in this decade and a new type of culture formed on the radios and televisions. As the years go by, this country will always remember what the 90’s were all about.
