Science in the 1990’s brought new technology and discoveries that changed the way the world looked at things. The Hubble Space Telescope was launched during this era as well as the start of the Human Genome Project. Photoshop also came into the image-editing world.

The Hubble Space Telescope is the largest and most versatile telescope used for astronomy. Launched April 24, 1990, on the Space Shuttle Columbia, It became the only telescope to be serviced in space by astronauts. There have been numerous installments added to it. It is currently not in operation but will resume in September of 2009. It has taking photos of distant galaxies that other telescopes cannot reach.

The Human Genome Project began in 1990. Its purpose is to map every single gene in the human genome. Headed by James D. Watson, they wanted to understand the genetic make up of the human species. It is still today the most investigational projects in modern science. It was completed in 2003 and helped science in a major way.

Adobe Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 for Macintosh. It has become the standard program for graphics professionals. Created by Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, it was made to edit images on the computer. It started in 1987 when Thomas Knoll, a doctoral candidate in computer vision, was trying to find a way to display grayscale images on a black-white bitmap monitor. By doing this, he made a code called "Display" which grabbed the attention of his brother John Knoll. John was an Industrial Light and Magic employee who motivated Thomas to turn it into an image-editing program. For a few months, they worked on the program, which came to be known as ImagePro. Later in the year, Thomas renamed the program to Photoshop. He made a deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to sell copies of it. Meanwhile, John went to Silicon Valley to demonstrate Photoshop to the engineers at Apple Computer Inc and the art director of Adobe, Russell Brown. Fortunately, both of their presentations to different companies were successful and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988." Both brothers continued to work on Photoshop and to improve it. Thomas remained writing program codes and in 1990 Photoshop 1.0 was released.

Photoshop, the Human Genome Project, and the Hubble Space Telescope were all apart of the 1990’s.  These projects changed society and were made major advancements in science. Technology in the 90’s progressed into the new millennia and helped advancements into the new era.
