The Beginning of the 1900s

The 1900's was the start of the twentieth century and also marked the the beginning for new inventions, led to many new discoveries and shocking events, and there were many political figures who had a great impact on the world of today. One of the newest inventions was the first airplane to fly overseas and there were even great leaders like Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T, Washington who helped and fought for the rights of their people. Although there were some issues that took place in the 1900's which included people migrating over to the states, and what they did to raise money and support their families, as well as what they did for entertainment.

In the beginning of the 1900's, there were many historical events that led to new inventions and discoveries. The first airplane was invented by the Wright Brothers and it first took flight in North Carolina and was also the first time a radio message was sent overseas. The Wright Brothers thus became the first two Americans to to invent and build the world's first successful airplane, thus making the "first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight controlled, powered and sustained heaverier-than-air human flight" on December 19th 1903. Their hard work with bicycles and machinery influenced their belief in that an unstable flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice.

The Philippine American War took place between 1899 and 1913. There was a conflict between the United States and the Philippines , struggling against the United States annexation of the Islands. The Americans supported annexation of the Filipinos because many people thought it would boost the United States economy and strengthen their military and naval power. President McKinely originally wanted to annex the Filipinos because many people thought it would boost the United States economy and strengthen their military and naval power. President McKinely originally wanted to annex the Filipinos because he didn't think they were civilized or fit to govern themselves and that the Americans were superior to them. Governor-General Fermin Jaudenes made a secret agreement with Captain George Dewey and General Wesley Merritt not to allow the Filipinos to enter the city. As a result of actions, Captain Emilo Aguinaldo led the Filipino troops to attack the American troops. The Filipinos fought the war so that they can get their rights, independence and country back. In the end, over one million Filipino civilians perished in the war and the United States won and gave laws leading to the Philippines self-governing and independence.

Later in the 1900's, football was popular at only a few Ivy League colleges and basketball had yet to catch on. Baseball was America's most popular sport at the time and made it's way to a national hit. Every small town had a fierce competitave league and amateur baseball teams existed for years. The American League was estabished in 1900 to rival the National League to organize teams. The rival leagues played the first World Series in 1903, with Boston defeating Pittsburgh and soon spread over to Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and New York. As a commemoration to this special occasion, the most famous baseball anthem,"Take me out to the Ball Game", was first heard in 1909.

Aside from the wonderous events that took place, there were also strong politcal leaders in the 1900's who helped, even befriended, and fought for the rights or their people. Theodore Roosevelt, also known as Teddy for short, was the 26th president of the United States and was considered one of the best. He was born in Octobet 27th, 1858 in New York. He was most famous for his personality: his energy, his vast range of interests, his masculinity and most of all, his "cowboy image". Theodore Roosevelt won the Nobel Prize and Peace Prize for negotiating to end the Russo-Japanese War, build the Panama Canal, established the U.S. Forest Service via the American Antiquities Act of 1906 and much more. He was later than re-elected to run for president again but he declined because he vowed to only run once in his lifetime.

Booker T. Washington was an African-American educator, orator, author , and a leader of the African American community. He was born in April 5th, 1856 in Hale's Ford, Virginia, United States. Booker T. Washington was freed from slavery as a child and worked at many menial jobs in West Virginia and earned his way through education at Hampton Institute and Wayland Seminary and also became the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute, a teacher's college for blacks. He thought education was a crucial key towards African American citizens rising within the social and economic structure of the United States. Booker T. Washington fought to obtain youth, freedom, and education so that he could give to the people who needed it most.

However, despite all of the countless inventions and events and great heroes that made life worthwhile, there were many issues such as migration, money and entertainment. Almost nine million people from around the world began moving over to the United States to find new homes as well as the American Dream. There were many people who competed for jobs as well as new ways to make cash to buy a home and support their families. Back in the 1900's, all of their entertainment mostly revolved around music, books, and the radio, it was the life. Such favorites included 1902,"Mr. Dooley" by Jean Schwartz and 1909,"My Pony Boy" by Charlie O' Donnell.

In conclusion, the 1900's was an exciting new period for the United States. It brought in new inventions, and it had many great influences like Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. Those two helped reshape the world into the great world it is today. Even though there were harsh time when people were migrating over the United States looking for a place to live, they still had some kind of entertainment and enjoyed themselves. In my personal opinion, I thought the 1900's was the best decade because it gave birth to all of te things we have and use today. I chose the plane because it enabled men to fly high to the skies and I liked learning about my heritage as a Filipino American. I also liked learning more about sports because i got to learn where and when baseball started and why people enjoyed it so much. Reseacrching the 1900's was like watching history in the making.
