The Great Depression
In 1930 United States went through many hardships. The Great Depression hit the United States vigorously which had produced poverty and fatality. During the Great Depression, Herbert Hoov er was the president who tried to renovate the economy but was not very successful at it. He used many different tactics to improve the economy; unfortunately the results were nothing except failure. During Herbert Hoover’s term, the economy did not improved one bit; in fact it was getting worse. For the next presidential election, Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the election due to Hoover’s unproductive efforts.
During Roosevelt’s administration over the U.S., he used many methods to make progress in the economy, and succeeded in doing so gradually. His plan was “The New Deal” which attained the increase of employment, hunger relief, rescue of homes and farms foreclosures, and stabilizing the banking system. He helped home and farm owners by inviting bills to regulate the stock market and provide mortgage relief. To help the unemployment he used the Civilian Conservation Corps. To help the banks, Roosevelt signed the Glass Steagall Act, which placed strict rules on banks and assured deposits through the new Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He then, passed the National Recovery Act to create competition in business and more public work. These actions were only the beginning in enhancing the weak economyCongress surpassed an amendment to the Volstead Act, which banned the sale of alcohol. Under the authority of the new law, no more than 3.2 percent alcohol was allowed to be sold legally. In 1933, prohibition was finally ended due to many oppositions and accusations; when the Depression had taken over the U.S. the public was complaining that the prohibition was taking jobs away from those in need. This was merely the beginning of the end of prohibition. A group of people formed the Association against the Prohibition Amendment. They were wealthy, prevailing people who thought that the government should not interfere in people’s private lives. Politicians agreed to sign the prohibition amendment.
When Herbert Hoover was ruling U.S., he was blamed for the depression. He was disliked by many people(public) after he had placed the U.S. in Depression and was unable to handle it. His methods to recover the economy was not helping the economy. All of his tactics went in vain with either little or no accomplishment.
Franklin D. Roosevelt on the other hand, used new tactics to improve the economy and he accomplished in doing so. He impressed the public by using different methods to help the country. He understood people’s problems and was attached emotionally, due to his personal experience which helped him understand human suffering. He always had a deep interest in history and politics.
In the meantime, Farmers were having difficulty to farm due to the soil. The soil had turned into dust because of the way the soil was treated many years before. Which had caused the Dust Bowl. The dust blew many distances away to East coasts cities. Oklahoma and Texas were hit the hardest. Black blizzards were wind storms which had caused severe damages to many cities. Farmers couldn’t raise crops, they had no other choice other than to leave a nd abandon their insignificant farms. Due to Dust Bowl there were many migration, nearly 3 million people left the Great Plains states. This was the largest migration in the U.S. history. Many moved to California thinking of better conditions and jobs would be available but they received nothing but disappointment. It was difficult to get jobs in farms because they were mechanized. The only jobs available were as pickers. Ex-owners of farms, instead of cultivating many acres of wheat or cotton then were picking fruits and vegetables for pennies a day. This issue had taken place when Hoover was in control. To reform this issue Hoover set up an Agriculture Marketing Act to buy large amounts of farm surpluses to help stabilize crop prices.
Immigration was a concern in the U.S. for the Japanese and Mexicans. They were not welcomed in America by the Americans. Despite Japanese’s many contribution to the U.S. they were not welcomed. Japanese had influenced California on agriculture and prices. Mexican immigrants were still bound to restrictions of tax and ban on undesirable immigrants. The U.S. allowed them in because they would work for lower wages which helped the economy. But as the affects of the Depression hit, U.S. born citizens wanted the local government to direct relief money and grants to them (U.S. citizens) and not Mexicans.
In the decade of the 1930, depression was the largest factor which traumatized many Americans. The Depression was the first and only time in history where the economy was in such crisis. Many people committed suicide because of the economy issue because they knew that they would not be able to survive through this phase. A method of earning money was being eliminated, which left many unemployed or with low wages. The situation turned extremely difficult and the workers lives were at risk more than ever before. Many workers were fired due to lack of payments of businesses because they couldn’t afford so many employees due to wages. Problems never ended in the U.S., it was difficult to think positively. The situations were so severe that the term HOPE seemed beyond the world.
