In the 19-tens there had been a lot of confusion when it came to artistic vision, and what made art…art. Many influential artists had the ability to channel this confusion into a freeing independence. It was mainly the Realist Movement that had inspired artists to create scenes that were not as glamorous, and captured the idea of the modern life. Artists Having the ability to recreate the modern life became known as ‘Ash Can’ realists. Many photographers such as James Vanderzee captured the modern life by opening a studio of photography in Harlem nd began 50 years of documenting his neighbors; they dedicated their lives for their art. Charlie Chaplin, one of the most influential comedians of all time, changed the miserable state of WW1 into one of humor.

The natural beauty of the modern life that many artists had been able to capture into their art became one of the most dominant styles throughout the 19-tens. James Vanderzee, whom had formed his life to recreating the modern world in his art, and Charlie Chaplin, whom had been the only comedian to change the tragedy of WW1 into one of comedy, just goes to show how the independence of the art world of the 19-teens, changed the face of art forever.

James Vanderzee, from Lenox, Massachusetts, the second of six children, grew up with music, he had played the piano and violin, but had always had a passion for art from a very young age. In making his art unique, and naturally beautiful, Vanderzee would never retouch the negatives of anything. Vanderzee had continuously used the theme of the emergent Black middle class. By combining several photos onto one image, Vanderzee received the reputation of transcending his art beyond the subject, and capturing the scenes of his art for all it could be.

Charlie Chaplin, English comedic actor and filmmaker, had inspired many comedians today to find the will to turn tragedy into comedy.  As WW1 grew, Chaplin channeled humor into the subject, and was able to find a relief in his humor, as did many others. Chaplin had been discovered once producers saw his amateur act with Karno Troupe by the names of Mack Sennett, Mabel Normand, Minta Durfee, and Ferry Arbuckle. Shortly after, Chaplin had been hired for the Keystone Film Company as a replacement for Ford Sterling.

The 19-tens was a time when every artist attempted in creating his or her own style. Those significant few artists defined a generation. It was unique talent combined with courage that drove these amazing artists to accomplish what they did.
